The visit of this 2490 meters above sea level rocky city on the Andes Mountain is the high point of any visit to South America. There are many theories to explain the origin and the importance of the city Machu Picchu.

First Theory: The city was unknown to the Incas and was built by pre-inca people.

Second theory: The city served as haven for the Nustas(Virgins of the Sun), during the Spanish conquer.

Third Theory: The city was the last capital of the Inca Kingdom.

The name "Machu Picchu" in Quechua language is the name of a hill, which one calls Machu Picchu. Machu means "old" and Picchu "hill"

The area of the city is 800-1000 meters long in north-south direction and about 500 meters wide.
