The holy snowed Andean mountain

Ausangate, at 6372 mt high is one of the most beautiful snowed mountains in Peru. The little towns which surround this mountain are mainly Quechua speakers. As well as they have kept their language, they also continue living according to their age-old believes, ideology and uses. Each year in May hundreds of pilgrims with costumes, music and dances take part of a ritual to worship the Apu (God) Ausangate.

Excursion to Ausangate

6 Days / 5 Nights

1st day Cusco – Tinki

Early in the morning we start out trip in a private bus from Cusco to Urcos city.

Our next stop in the quechua community of Ccatqa. This place has a spectacular view of the region.

After 5 hours surrounding up the mountains, we will arrive to the town Tinki.

Here we overnight in a small accommodation in Tinki.

2nd day Tinki – Upis

At first we take breakfast.

We begin our walk up to the high lands, here the weather is dry and the area has not much vegetation.

After 3 hours walking we arrive to our place of resting to have lunch.

From here on we always will enjoy very nice views of the sacred snowed mountain Ausangate.

Then we continue our way for 2 more hours until our first camping site in Upis (4400 m)

We rest and have our dinner with the spectacular view of Ausangate.

Overnight.

3rd day Upis - Lago Ausangate

After breakfast we walk up for 2 hours until La Arapa Pass (4850m), then we go down to the point of rest and take lunch. Here is the habitat for falcons and vizcachas (a sort of rabbit).

In this zone, there are 3 small lakes special for its different color.

After lunch we continue up by a long and narrow path for aprox. 2 hours until the next pass of Apuncha (4900m)

Then, walking down, we descend for 1,5 more hour until our next camping place in Ausangatecocha (4400m). Here we rest, have our dinner and overnight.

4th day Lago Aunsangate – Qampa

After breakfast, we start with our walking up for 2 hours. We reach 3 passes: Palomani (5200m.) which is the highest point of our excursion. From here we continue our way down for 2 hours through an area of lamas, alpacas and vizcachas until the second pass of Pampa Cancha (4050m), then we walk up again until the next camping place of Qampa (4300m)

5th day Qampa – Pacchanta

After breakfast, our hike goes up for 2 hours in direction to the pass of Qampa (5000m)

Then we walk down with direction to the lake Qomercocha and we arrive to the pass Pacchata (4100m) approximately after 5 hours of walking.

Pacchanta is a small community which principal attraction is a thermal water pool where you can enjoy a pleasant bath.

Overnight.

6th day Pacchanta – Tinki

After breakfast we walk down until Tinki in approximately 2 hours.

Here wait for us the bus for the trip back to Cusco.

Note: The departure and arrivals as well as the hiking are approximate time.

The camping places are taken according to guide meaning and it depends also how the group develop.

Due the weather conditions, we recommend doing this trekking between the months of April and November.
