Another way hiking to Machupicchu

This hiking excursion combines two of the best routes of the region. One circles the majestic mountains of Cusco, the Salkantay ( 6271mt) with its mighty ice fields and the 5000 meter pass. Here lie the home stead of the Andes Condors and Chinchillas.

Further on the route goes up to the deep lying plateaus, where the Alpacas are bred. Later one reaches and follows the famous Inka Trail. It is the ancient pilgrim path to the lost city of the Incas in the Andes Machu Picchu.

This new hiking route allows the visitor to experience the unbelievable ecological diversity of the icy heights of Salkantay, to the lower thick vegetation of the misty forest. Combined with the many fascinating Inca ruins, this hiking offers a breathtaking experience for the nature lovers and the trekking fans.

EXCURSION 5 DAYS / 4 NIGHTS

Day 1

We leave Cusco around 5am in direction to Mollepata, which we will arrive around 9am. With local transportations we travel further to Soraypama. After a period of rest we begin our 4-hours trekking tour to our first camp base, which lies in the impressive slopes of Salkantay. This region with its imponent beauty proves to the visitor, why this particular Camino Inca is also an unforgettable experience. Our first day ends with the supper in the mountain world of SALKANTAY.

Day 2

Around 6am our guests will be awakened by our guides. After a full breakfast, around 7am, begins our most difficult day of this excursion.

This part of the trip takes the longest time.

We run through the high mountain valley of Umantay, which is connected to those of Salkantay (6270m)

Around 9am we reach the highest pass of Salkantay, the Umantay (4700m). From here we have an unforgettable view on the valleys of the high mountains and the snow-covered peaks of the Salkantay Mountains. In good weather we will also meet one or the other animal inhabitants of this region. We take our lunch by the shore of one of the rivers in high mountain. It takes another 4 hours before we reach our second camp base. It is located in the middle of the misty forest of Salkantay. Here we serve tea and supper.

Day 3

We begin our 3rd day of the tour at about 6am with a sumptuous breakfast.

Today we shall have unforgettable impressions of the animal and plant worlds of the high Andes canyon. In addition, we shall encounter many waterfalls. We climb down to the entrance of the rain forest.

We serve lunch in Playa. From there we cross the river in an adventurous fashion-namely in Zip Line Carts (metal baskets pulled by steel wires across the river). Later we arrive at the village Santa Teresa. At this point a small bus waits to take us along to the coffee, banana, pineapple and other fruit plantations, downwards to our last camp base. It is also interesting to see the planting of coca. The day ends with a relaxing bath in the hot springs (40°C temperature) and a nourishing and filling buffet.

Day 4

Today the day begins as other days with a rich breakfast. About 8am we visit the settlement of Santa Teresa. We will eat lunch early-around 10:45am- so that we can start early our 3 hours hiking along the Holy River. We will reach a village, which provides water energy to Cusco. From there we climb on the train to Aguas Calientes. We spend the night in a Hostal (with private bath) and the foot of Machu Picchu.

Day 5

The breakfast is included in the accommodation price. We discuss when we will to start the trip to Holy City of the Incas. First to the entrance with the bus, where our guide already awaits us for our 2 hours tour in the rock city.

This day ends with the return trip on train to Cusco via Ollantaytambo (optional: taxi or small bus for $10 from Ollantaytambo to Cusco.

Tour 2: Lares-Huaran-Machupicchu

A warm bath in the Andes

Another way hiking to Machupicchu

Day 1 – Cusco / Lares / Quishuarani/Cuncani

Our bus leaves Cusco around 06:00 and goes through out the Sacred Valley, passing by Pisaq and arriving in Calca city. Here you can buy something small to eat and to drink and to go to toilette before to start hiking. We leave Calca by car around 08:00, after two hours we arrive to the town Huacahuasi (3700m), here we start our hike. Along this hike you can see the small Andean villages, spectacular views of our mountains, alpacas and llamas.

We start walking up in a small valley and after a short time we arrive to a lake. Then, it comes a hard way through a narrow path until the top of the first pass well known as Abra Huillquijasa (4200 m), around 3 and a half hours from village Quishuarani. Then we reach various turquise water lakes, an impressive landscape, where we will have our lunch. Our next point is the town of Cuncani (3750m) located at the bottom of the valley. We arrive to Cuncani at around 16 pm and built our camping.

The hike takes us around 6 hours (12 km).

Day 2 – Cuncani / Lago Isaycocha

We wake up around 6am and after breakfast, we start our walking a path down for 2 hours until the valley of de Chancachaca (3600m). We continue our way for aprox. 1 ½ hours to the small town of Huacawasi (3700m), here you can see the houses made of stone with roofs made of reeds. The people of this beautiful place produce colourfull carpets. They also show you the way how to do it. We rest here and take our lunch and have some time with people of the zone. The next is to continue our walking for 2 hours until the top of Ipsayccasa a 4500m. This is the highest pass of our hike. From here the view of the landscape is impressive..

Now we walk down slowly during aprox. 1 hour to our second day camping place next to a beautiful lake called Ipsaycocha. We can be lucky and see Andean ducks and different sort of birds of the lakes. This time we walk 15 km during 6 or 7 hours.

Day 3 – Isaycocha / Patacancha / Ollantaytambo / Aguas Calientes

After two days of exhaustive hiking, this day results easier.

After breakfast, we walk down a wide valley during aprox. 2 and a half hours until the village of Patacancha. Here we have the opportunity to see some hand made work produced by the people of the zone. These are high quality carpets which are well known for their complex designs in which they represent their daily way of life and culture.

You have also the opportunity to take a relaxed walk by the valley of Willoy, a quechua town where the people are still wearing their traditional costumes and keep yet their old way of life.

From Patacancha we take our transport and go to the Inca city of Ollantaytambo, here we take a rest and have lunch. Afterwards, we take the train to Aguas Calientes. Here we will overnight.

Day 4 - Aguas Calientes / Cusco

We wake up at 05:00. Have breakfast at 05:30, then we take the bus to Machupicchu ruins. We have to leave early for thse who want to walk up to the Hayna Picchu mount, after a regular registration. This short hike takes two hours of guided tour.

During the visit to the mount Huayna Picchu, you will enjoy the magic enviroment of the zone, the clouds over Machupicchu going up and down and disappearing through the vegetation and mountains. After the round tour, you have enaugh time to explore the yone and take picture of all over Huayna Picchu and the impressive phanoramic views of Machu. Now as you prefer, you can take lunch outside of the ruins or take the bus back to Aguas Calientes and explore this small and picturesque town.

The train back to Cusco arrives in Cusco approximately at 21:00

Tour 3: Moras-Salineras-Sacred Valley

One day tour

This tour begins every morning with one hour bus ride from Cusco to Maras town, over the high land of the Andes. This is the point of departure of the hiking.

This route is simple, over even grounds and is interrupted by many impressive valley rides. The zone offers many fantastic views of the fruitful highland and the snow-covered cap of the Andes.

The route leads first to Moray (circular terraces of the Incas) and then to Maras and the salt terraces, which today are used for salt extraction.

This impressive tour ends with a long and partly steep departure into the holy Valley of the Incas, where the guests will be taken back to Cusco.
