Peru Information
Money Exchange:
Euros and dollars are practically accepted everywhere. However it is better to have some Soles with you, especially for small expenditures and transactions. There are many money exchanges on the streets, but it is preferable to exchange in an exchange office.
Credit Cards:
Visa, Master card, American Express and Diners are accepted in most restaurants, hotels and other providers of services. EC cards: there are Money automats (ATM Automated Teller Machine) in all big cities and tourist destinations. Here you can withdraw money with your EC cards and PIN numbers, as well as with your credit cards. Pay attention to the symbols such as "Cirrus" and "Maestro" from the master card family on the ATM. These symbols can also be found on your EC cards of your banks. The user fees will be determined by the individual banking institutions and are variable.
Electricity:
220 volt / 60 Hz
Water:
Drink only boiled water. We recommend industrial bottled water.
Passport:
Required for inland air travel and hotel registration. Take a photocopy of it.
Communication:
Most employees in tourist industry speak English, other languages are less used.
Tourist Information:
Can be found in airports and in bigger cities. They provide information and help.
Shopping:
Each area offer a rich selection of artistic objects and handicrafts. Specially recommended are woolen products, such as products from alpaca wool and ceramics.
Safety:
In general the streets in Peru are safe. One can walk, shopping and sightseeing in peace. The inner part of the big cities is supervised by the police. One should take some caution, however. Do not go to isolated areas. Be careful with your possessions in a extremely crowded areas, such as the markets. Take with you as little valuables as possible. Do not wear jewelry. Since a few years Peru has no problems with terrorism. The people enjoy today peace and safety. This reflects in Peru being one of the most economically advanced and safe countries in South America.
Tip:
In bars, restaurants and hotels 10% tips are usually given, even though service fees are already calculated in the bills.
Taxis in Lima:
The taxis in Lima have no taximeter. There is an established rate for different areas in Lima, for example one way from Miraflores to the airport cost 45 soles, try to pay exactly, otherwise it could be a problem for change. Anyway, make it clear in advance that you know how much does it cost. First make a deal of price. We recommend, to take a taxi directly inside the airports or in front of the hotels.
Taxis in Cusco:
Here we advise you to travel with the taxis. There are enough taxis. A taxi in the city costs only 3 soles. (airport service, 7 Soles). After 10 PM it would costs 2 or 3 Soles more.
Public Transportation:
The buses are valuable means of transport however, there are no fixed timetables or routes. This system is difficult for newcomers.
Telephone:
For international calls: 00 + country code. One can use telephone cards or coins in a public phone. The code for Peru from abroad is = +51, for Lima +1, for Cusco +84. With an operator: 108 for international calls, 109 for long distance calls inside the country. Example for international call to Cusco : 0051 84 000 000
Cellular Phone:
In Peru you can use your own cellular phone to receive or send messages, as long it is a Triband 1900. Claro is Peru's main supplier (GSM) which has contracts with all German Mobile Wireless

Airport Tax:
For in-country flights US$7. For international flights US$33. Attention: Make it sure that this fee is or not included in the price of the ticket. It must be paid before the flights in the airport.
Flight Confirmation:
Flights should be confirmed 48 hours before in-country flights and 72 hours before international flights.
Time Zones:
In winter 6 hours before mid European zone, in summer 7 hours before, because in Peru there is no daylight saving time in summer (18:00 hour in MEZ is equal to 12:00 hours in Peru, in winter 13:00 hour)

Seasons in Perú (south hemisphere):
• Summer: 22nd December - 21st March
• Autumn: 22nd March – 21st June
• Winter : 22nd June – 22nd September
• Spring: 23rd September – 21st December
Lima capital (coast):
Temperatures in summer are very warm until max. 30°C and min. 20°C. Normally it is very sunny.
In autumn and spring, temperatures vary between max.23° and min. 17°C
In winter time max. 18°C and min. 10° frequently cloudy (fog) and humid specially near the sea.
Peru shows diverse geographical climatic areas.
• In the sub - tropic coast area of Perú, temperatures in summer exceed the 30ºC, while in winter around 12ºC.
• In the Andean mountains the weather is cold and dry and temperatures vary between 9°C and 20°C , according moments of day. Sun shines almost every day of the winter time but in shadow or inside the houses, temperatures are low (10°C/5°C). By night even minus 0° (June -5°C). Houses in Peru often have no-hitting system.
• The jungle in Peru is tropic, warm and humid with average temperatures of 25°C to 28°C.
• In the mountain range and jungle of Peru rain starts in November and ends in April.
Note: Do not forget to bring a rain coat and a sun cream!
