Machupicchu Inka city in the Andes – Wonder of the World

The visit of the 2490 meters above sea level rocky city on the Andes Mountain, Machu Picchu is the high point of any visit to South America. There are many theories to explain the origin and the importance of the city Machu Picchu.

First theory: The city was unknown to the Incas and was built by pre-Inca people.

Second theory: The city served as haven for the Ñustas (Virgins of the Sun), during the Spanish conquer.

Third theory: The city was the last capital of the Inca Kingdom.

Machu Picchu was not discovered by the Spanish conquerors until July the 24th 1911 by an expedition leaded by the North American Hiram Bingham.

The name "Machu Picchu" in Quechua language is the name of a hill; Machu means "old" and Picchu "hill".

Innumerable terraces built in the Andes lead to the ancient palaces, towers, temples, staircases, fountains, the famous “Intiwatana”, windows and gates; surrounded by green reised mountains.

From the top of the Huayna Picchu (Young hill) one can enjoy a real fantastic view of the citadel surrounded by the mountains and the holy river Urubamba or Willcamayu.

At the feet of Machupicchu, where the train station is located, the little town Aguas Calientes, offers the visitors a special atmosphere. All surrounded by the reised rocky mountains and its special climate, invite ones to take a warm or hot bath in its hot springs pools.
